Does a sports massage hurt?
It can feel intense, especially during deep tissue work or when addressing tight areas though this is necessary to achieve the end goal. The treatment should not be unbearable. Some clients call it “a good pain”. Always communicate with your therapist about your pain tolerance and comfort level.
How do I prepare before a sports massage?
Before a massage session, stay hydrated.
Avoid eating a heavy meal right before your session.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that’s easy to remove.
Do you need to know anything about me before a massage?
Prior to your first treatment, a medical questionnaire and an informed consent to massage document will need to be completed and signed. This is so that the therapist is aware of any medical conditions so that they can give the best treatment.
In some cases, it may be required that you will have to seek G.P. approval before a massage treatment as some conditions are what are called “red flag contraindications”. For example, deep vein thrombosis, viral and skin infections, uncontrolled hypertension, active cancer, severe heart conditions.
It is very important that you are open about any such conditions because massage could be problematic if the therapist is unaware. If there is any doubt, discuss with your massage therapist prior to treatment.
What should I expect during a massage treatment?
The therapist will focus on specific muscle groups relevant to your activities or issues that you are experiencing. Techniques use are many but include kneading, deep pressure, and stretching. Your therapist will explain what they are doing and why. If there is any technique that you do not like, do not hesitate to tell your therapist.
Will I be required to remove clothing during a massage?
During sports, therapeutic or deep tissue massage, skin contact is recommended between client and therapist to achieve the best results. Therefore, it is always a good idea to wear clothing such as shorts, sports bra or similar to an appointment so the therapist can conduct the best treatment. Your therapist will discuss any removal of clothing and your dignity is respected at all times. It is of the utmost importance that you feel comfortable during a massage treatment.
What should I do after a sports massage treatment?
Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins from the body.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol for up to 24 hours as they have a diuretic effect.
Get plenty of rest and avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours.
Stretch lightly to maintain flexibility.
Will I experience any negative effects after a sports massage?
Some common ones that develop within 24 – 48 hours are: muscle soreness, fatigue, stuffy or runny nose, increased thirst and headaches. Not everyone experiences these symptoms and they are a normal reaction to the effects that massage has on the body. Generally, if you experience these symptoms, they do not last long. If you have any concerns, consult your therapist
Will a sports massage benefit me even though I don’t participate in sports?
Absolutely! Sports massages are beneficial for anyone experiencing muscle tension, stress, or restricted mobility. The various types of massage are explained in the “Services & Prices” section of this website.
How often should I get a massage?
The answer to this question in many ways depends on what it is that you are looking for. If you are someone that wants physical maintenance and relaxation, it may be that a massage session once a month may suffice. For persons that have specific issues such as joint pain, restricted mobility or recovering from injury, it may be that you would need a number of sessions to bring you back to fitness again. Your therapist will advise you accordingly.
For athletes and sports people serious about their sport, I would suggest 1 – 2 times per month to maintain peak condition and reduce the chance of injury.
That said, if you wanted to come for a massage every week, then that would not matter and would be entirely up to you.
After all, who doesn’t feel health, vitality and wellness after a good massage?
